The US Visa Integrity Fee of at least $250, effective from fiscal year 2025, impacts all international travellers seeking nonimmigrant visas. Here’s what you need to know about refund eligibility and how to ensure your reimbursement process is smooth.
A refund of the Visa Integrity Fee is only possible when you satisfy strict requirements. You must follow all visa rules, avoid any status violation, and leave the US within 5 days after your authorised stay ends, as stated on your I-94 record. Alternatively, if you lawfully change your visa status (e.g. receive a Green Card) or get a valid visa extension inside the US, you may also be eligible for reimbursement. The refund is processed only after your visa period ends or your status changes, so keep all exit and legal documents ready to support your refund claim.
There are situations where no refund can be granted. If your visa is denied, you withdraw your application, never enter the US after issuance, or commit any visa violation, your $250 fee is nonrefundable. At present, there is no automatic process for reimbursement.
Applicants must actively request the refund and provide exit proof, such as boarding passes or official records. Details on the exact refund claim procedure are expected to be released by the Department of Homeland Security.

No broad waivers exist (except for certain official travellers). All others should treat the fee as nonrefundable unless proven eligible under government guidelines. This process may take time, and you must be proactive in collecting documentation and seeking a refund if you qualify.
Scenario | Refund Possible? |
---|---|
Visa denied/withdrawn/unused | No |
Overstay or visa term violation | No |
Depart the US within 5 days of expiry | Yes |
Legal status adjustment/extension | Yes |
The Visa Integrity Fee refund is available only in specific scenarios: timely departure or legal status change, provided you comply with all rules and maintain thorough documentation. For most, the reimbursement will require a formal application once a process is announced.
