As per ANI news report, US-based technology and manufacturing company 3M discussed expanding its presence in India, including in research and development, advanced manufacturing and local supply chains, during a meeting with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Asheville, North Carolina.

The meeting with 3M Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William Brown took place on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting.

Focus on Local Manufacturing and Research

The discussions covered the scope for greater localisation and technology development in India. Sitharaman said 3M could make greater use of Indian manufacturing capacity and technical talent for its operations.

The company’s India base could also support markets beyond the country, including the Asia-Pacific region and other global supply chains, according to the Finance Ministry.

Sitharaman also called for more investment in research and development, advanced manufacturing, and the development of local supply networks.

Data Security and Workforce Discussed

Data security was among the issues discussed during the meeting. The two sides also considered the use of India's talent pool within business and technology operations.

Brown referred to opportunities in technology development and local markets. He also acknowledged the availability of skilled workers in India and the role of government policies in supporting business operations.

The discussions come as India seeks to increase its role in manufacturing and technology, alongside its position as a major consumer market.

Meeting Held During G20 Engagements

The meeting was held during Sitharaman's participation in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors gathering in Asheville. She is on a nine-day official visit to Canada and the US from August 25 to September 2, with the US leg beginning on August 28.

The engagement also took place against a backdrop of growing trade between India and the US.

India-US Trade Figures

Total US goods and services trade with India was estimated at $239.6 billion in 2025, up 12.1%, or $25.8 billion, from 2024.
