Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, launched a 2 nm semiconductor chip developed at Qualcomm in Bengaluru on February 7, 2026, marking a milestone in advanced semiconductor design and engineering operations in India.

Launch of Qualcomm 2 nm Semiconductor Chip

During the launch event, the minister delivered a keynote address and highlighted India’s growing contribution to global semiconductor engineering.

He stated that the availability of skilled talent in the country has positioned India as an important participant in advanced chip design and development activities.

Progress Under India’s Semiconductor Efforts

Shri Vaishnaw referred to the structured approach adopted under India’s semiconductor initiatives.

The programme began with a focus on 28 nanometre technology, which addresses nearly 75% of application needs across automotive, telecom, power management and strategic sectors.

As of now, 10 semiconductor related units are under construction, with 4 units having started pilot production and undergoing customer validation.

Role of Academia and Talent Development

Since 2022, around 315 universities across India have been using Electronic Design Automation tools from global providers to enable students to design and validate semiconductor chips.

This initiative has allowed students from various institutions to participate in real chip design and tape out processes, contributing to a wider talent pipeline.

India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 Focus Areas

The minister outlined that India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 will emphasise 3 areas. These include support for design companies and startups, development of the full ecosystem including equipment, chemicals and testing, and enhancement of advanced skill capabilities through partnerships with universities.

Conclusion

The launch of the 2 nm semiconductor chip at Qualcomm Bengaluru reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s position in semiconductor design, manufacturing support infrastructure and talent development through coordinated government, industry and academic initiatives.
