On Thursday, September 24, 2026, the NIFTY50 index opened at 23,221.80 and went on to register an intraday high of 23,281.95. The index faced downward pressure during the session, touching an intraday low of 23,046.15 before closing at 23,063.10, down by 383.70 points or 1.64%.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) ranked second among the top gainers, with its share price advancing 0.89% to ₹239.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 75,47,102 shares. 

NTPC Limited (NTPC) was the third top gainer, with its share price gaining 0.18% to ₹326.60 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 75,33,628 shares. 

Top Losers on September 24, 2026 

HDFC Life Insurance Company Limited (HDFCLIFE) ended lower by 6.16% at ₹526.90 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 1,77,81,394 shares. 

Bajaj Finance Limited (BAJFINANCE) share price declined 5.87% to ₹982.00 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 1,32,07,120 shares. 

Axis Bank Limited (AXISBANK) shares fell 4.56% to ₹1,186.50 per share on the NSE. The total traded volume on the NSE stood at 1,05,17,874 shares.

Conclusion 

The NIFTY50 index closed lower by 1.64% at 23,063.10. The market breadth remained deeply negative with a weak advance-decline setup as 47 index constituents closed down. CIPLA, ONGC, and NTPC emerged as the top gainers, while HDFCLIFE, BAJFINANCE, and AXISBANK were among the top losers on September 24, 2026.
