India's semiconductor manufacturing ambitions are set to take a significant step forward as the Tata Electronics semiconductor facility at Jagiroad in Assam prepares to begin production within the current financial year, as per PTI news report.
The project is expected to play a major role in strengthening domestic chip manufacturing capabilities while supporting global supply chains.
The Jagiroad facility, being developed by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (TSAT), is positioned as one of India's largest semiconductor manufacturing projects.
With an investment of approximately ₹27,000 crore, the plant is being established to support the country's broader objective of building a self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem.
According to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, progress of the project was recently reviewed during discussions with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The minister indicated that production is expected to commence during the ongoing financial year.
Once operational, the facility is expected to manufacture up to 48 million semiconductor chips every day.
The plant will utilise advanced packaging technologies, including flip-chip packaging and Integrated System in Package (ISIP) technology.
The chips produced at the facility are expected to serve a wide range of industries, including automotive, electric vehicles, telecommunications, and consumer electronics.
In addition to meeting domestic demand, the project is also expected to cater to international markets, further strengthening India's position in the global semiconductor value chain.
Apart from manufacturing output, the project is expected to create substantial employment opportunities.
The facility is projected to generate around 15,000 direct jobs and between 11,000 and 13,000 indirect jobs, supporting economic activity across Assam and neighbouring regions.
Alongside industrial development, efforts are also underway to build a skilled workforce for the sector. Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that programmes conducted by the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) to train young citizens in semiconductor manufacturing technologies are progressing well.
