India and France have jointly inaugurated the final assembly line for H-125 helicopters in Karnataka, marking a significant milestone in defence and aerospace manufacturing cooperation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron virtually launched the Tata-Airbus H125 helicopter assembly facility at Vemagal in Karnataka.
The project, undertaken by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus, is expected to attract investment exceeding ₹1,000 crore.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the programme is anticipated to create direct and indirect employment opportunities for India’s younger workforce.
Speaking after the inauguration, PM Modi said, “We take pride in the fact that, together, India and France will manufacture in India the world's only helicopter capable of flying to the heights of Mount Everest and export it to the entire world.”
The ‘Made in India’ H-125 helicopter is intended to meet the Indian armed forces’ requirement for a light multi-role helicopter while also opening opportunities in civil and para-public markets. It is expected to support military operations in the Himalayan region.
Tata and Airbus also plan to produce a military variant, the H125M, from the Indian facility with a high level of indigenised components and technologies. The first locally assembled H125 is scheduled for delivery in early 2027, with exports planned for the South Asian market.
Under the joint assembly line arrangement, Tata will handle assembly, integration and testing of structural, mechanical and electrical systems, along with final flight testing before delivery.
The H-125 is the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopter and forms part of Airbus’ Ecureuil family, which has accumulated more than 40 million flight hours globally.
The aircraft is capable of operating in high-and-hot and extreme environments and can be configured for missions including firefighting, law enforcement, rescue, air ambulance, passenger transport and aerial work. It is also the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest.
