Tata Advanced Systems and Lockheed Martin have started construction of a dedicated maintenance, repair and overhaul facility for the C-130J Super Hercules, as per news reports.
The project strengthens India’s defence support ecosystem at a time when both companies are actively engaged in the competition to supply heavy lift transport aircraft to the Indian Air Force.
The new MRO unit will be set up in Bengaluru and will provide servicing capabilities for C-130J Super Hercules aircraft operated in India.
The announcement marks an expansion of the long-standing partnership between the 2 companies and underscores the rising demand for indigenous maintenance infrastructure for advanced military platforms.
The development comes at a crucial juncture, as the Tata Lockheed Martin joint venture is positioning the C-130J as a key contender for the Indian Air Force’s upcoming procurement programme for nearly 80 heavy lift transport aircraft.
The Indian Air Force presently operates 12 C-130J aircraft. The platform is recognised globally as one of the leading tactical airlift solutions capable of supporting troop transport, disaster response and strategic operations.
Establishing an MRO facility within India is expected to reduce turnaround times, enhance fleet readiness and support the country’s broader objective of strengthening domestic defence capabilities.
The initiative further aligns with India’s push for increased localisation, technical development and long-term sustainment infrastructure across major defence programmes.
