SEBI Whole-Time Member Kamlesh Chandra Varshney Receives Extension Until August 2029

Kamlesh Chandra Varshney will remain a whole-time member in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), as per news reports. Just days before his current term was set to finish, the Appointments Committee of Union Cabinet approved his reappointment.
The order was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on September 15, 2026. Unless further orders cut short his term, Varshney will continue in the post till 4 August 2029 by when he turns 65.
Extension Runs Until August 2029
Varshney will continue in the role until he turns 65 on August 4, 2029. The order also states that the tenure can end earlier if further orders are issued.
The extension keeps him in SEBI’s senior leadership while the regulator continues its work on regulatory and market-development initiatives.
At SEBI Since September 2022
Varshney joined SEBI as a whole-time member in September 2022. He currently looks after important areas within the regulator, including the Corporate Finance Department and the Surveillance Department.
His continuation means he will remain involved with these departments under the extended tenure.
Earlier Role at Finance Ministry
Before moving to SEBI, Varshney worked as Joint Secretary in the Tax Policy Division of the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. He belongs to the 1990 batch of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax).
Leadership Continuity at SEBI
The reappointment provides continuity at the senior level of the capital markets regulator. Varshney’s responsibilities cover areas linked to corporate finance and market surveillance.
The order does not specify any new responsibilities or changes to the departments handled by him.
