SEBI Closing Auction Session from August 3, 2026: New Timings and Rules for F&O Stocks

From August 3, 2026, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) will implement the Closing Auction Session (CAS) for eligible Futures & Options (F&O) stocks.
The new framework changes the way closing prices are determined for these stocks and extends trading hours for equity derivatives by 10 minutes. The change will apply only to F&O stocks in the initial phase.
What Changes from August 3, 2026?
Under the new framework, non-F&O stocks will continue to trade until 3:30 PM, with no change in market timings.
However, F&O stocks will follow a revised schedule:
Regular cash market trading: 9:15 AM to 3:15 PM
Closing Auction Session (CAS): 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM
Equity derivatives trading: Till 3:40 PM
Post-close session: 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM
The post-close session will continue to allow trades at the official closing price.
What Is the Closing Auction Session?
The Closing Auction Session is a dedicated auction conducted after regular trading hours for eligible F&O stocks.
Instead of matching buy and sell orders continuously, the system first collects all eligible orders during the auction period. These orders are then matched at a single equilibrium price, which is the price at which the maximum number of shares can be traded.
This equilibrium price becomes the stock's official closing price.
Why Is SEBI Introducing CAS?
The closing price is an important benchmark in the Indian securities market. It is used for:
Calculating benchmark indices such as the Nifty 50 and Sensex.
Determining the Net Asset Value (NAV) of mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
Settlement of futures and options contracts.
Valuation of investment portfolios.
According to LiveMint, the auction-based mechanism is expected to provide a better reflection of end-of-day demand and supply than the existing VWAP-based methodology.
Which Stocks Will Be Covered Under CAS?
The Closing Auction Session will initially apply only to stocks with listed F&O contracts.
Stocks outside the F&O segment will continue to trade until 3:30 PM, and their closing prices will continue to be calculated using the existing VWAP-based method unless SEBI expands the framework in the future.
Meanwhile, futures and options contracts on eligible stocks will continue trading until 3:40 PM, even after the closing auction for the underlying shares has concluded.
Conclusion
Starting August 3, 2026, SEBI's Closing Auction Session will change how closing prices are determined for eligible F&O stocks while extending equity derivatives trading by 10 minutes. The new auction-based mechanism aims to improve price discovery by using a single equilibrium price based on end-of-day demand and supply.
