Sarvam to Launch India’s First LLM with Support from 40,000 GPUs in 2025

India is preparing to mark a key milestone in the AI space, as homegrown startup Sarvam gets ready to launch the nation’s first domestic large language model (LLM) with major GPU support from the Centre under the IndiaAI Mission. This initiative is aimed at building India's sovereign AI capacity with scalable infrastructure.
Sarvam Leads the Charge in India’s AI Revolution
Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI is likely to become the first Indian company to roll out a foundational AI model by early 2026. Under the IndiaAI Mission, Sarvam secured 4,096 NVIDIA H100 SXM GPUs through Yotta Data Services. This initiative received close to ₹99 crore in GPU subsidies. Founded in July 2023 by Vivek Raghavan and Pratyush Kumar of AI4Bharat, Sarvam aims to build population-scale Gen AI solutions tailored to Indian languages and use cases.
IndiaAI Mission Targets 40,000 GPU Capacity
The Government of India is significantly boosting computational infrastructure by providing access to 40,000 GPUs, 4 times the original goal of 10,000 GPUs. So far, 34,000 GPUs have been empanelled, and another 6,000 are in the process. The fund supporting this effort has allocated ₹111 crore in GPU subsidies, enabling developers, students, and enterprises to access cutting-edge AI training and deployment tools.

Full-Stack Gen AI Development by Sarvam
Sarvam AI is developing a complete AI stack—from foundational model research to an enterprise-grade Gen AI platform. The startup will collaborate with Indian enterprises to co-develop domain-specific AI models using their proprietary data. Their approach prioritises ethical training with minimal bias, especially for Indic languages, aiming to power public service and population-scale applications.
India’s Techno-Legal AI Governance
To ensure AI development is safe and unbiased, India is adopting a techno-legal framework. Institutions like IIT Jodhpur and the AI Safety Institute are creating tools to detect defects and monitor biases. This balanced approach is gearing up India to match global advances while prioritising responsible use.
Conclusion
Sarvam AI’s progress marks a transformative step toward India becoming a global AI hub. With government backing, massive GPU access, and domain-focused development, India’s first LLM represents a key stride in sovereign AI capability and digital public innovation.
