Rain Carbon Canada Inc., a subsidiary of Rain Industries Limited, along with Northern Graphite Corporation, has received funding support of up to C$860,000 (€530,000) under the Canada-Germany Collaborative Industrial Research and Development Program, as per the exchange filings.
The project will run for 24 months and has a total estimated cost of $2.2 million.
The project focuses on finding ways to use by-products from natural graphite processing to produce battery-grade anode materials. These materials are components of lithium-ion batteries. The research will study methods to increase the usable output from mined graphite while cutting down on waste and reducing the amount of material that goes unused.
The project is supported by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) through its ZIM program. The work is being carried out by NGC Battery Materials GmbH, Northern Graphite’s Germany-based unit, and Rain Carbon Canada Inc.
The research will be conducted at Rain Carbon’s Technology Innovation Centre for Energy Storage Materials in Hamilton, Ontario. The facility has pilot-scale setups for material processing, coating, and testing. Rain Carbon will also use its LIONCOAT carbon coating process as part of the testing and evaluation phase.
Northern Graphite will supply graphite feedstock from its operations in Canada and Namibia for the study.
