India marked a new milestone in electronics manufacturing as Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the country’s first tempered glass production facility for mobile devices in Noida.

The plant, set up by Optiemus Electronics in partnership with US-based Corning Incorporated, will manufacture high-quality protective glass under the globally recognised “Engineered by Corning” brand. Products from the unit will serve both Indian and international markets, boosting the Make in India vision.

Minister Highlights India’s Electronics Growth

Vaishnaw stressed that producing tempered glass locally is a critical step toward self-reliance in mobile component manufacturing. He pointed out that India aims to eventually build every part used in phones, from chips to cover glass and server components. The minister also revealed that the first Made in India chip will roll out soon.

He noted that India’s electronics output has multiplied six-fold in just over a decade, reaching ₹11.5 lakh crore, with exports worth ₹3 lakh crore and 2.5 million jobs created. He cited India’s design talent as its strongest asset, mentioning examples such as IIT Madras’ microcontroller innovation and railway equipment now being exported to Europe.

With GDP growth of 7.8% in Q1 FY26, he underlined India’s position as a stable, innovation-driven economy and called on youth to contribute to Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.

Investment, Capacity and Future Expansion

The Noida facility has begun with a ₹70 crore investment, giving it the ability to produce 25 million units annually in Phase 1 and directly employing over 600 people. In Phase 2, an additional ₹800 crore will be invested to raise output to 200 million units a year and create more than 4,500 new jobs.

The plant is equipped with advanced capabilities, including scribing, shaping, polishing, dual-stage rinsing, chemical tempering, coating, printing and lamination, all subject to strict quality checks. India’s domestic tempered glass market alone is estimated at over 500 million pieces valued at around ₹20,000 crore, while globally the sector is worth more than $60 billion, underscoring the scale of opportunity.

Conclusion

The launch of India’s first tempered glass plant reflects how local manufacturing is expanding beyond phones and semiconductors to include key accessories as well. With strong government backing, significant investment, and international collaboration, the initiative is set to reduce import dependence, strengthen exports, and generate large-scale employment.
