NTPC Arm NVVN Set to Start 500 MWh BESS Operations, Plans Another 500 MWh

NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, is preparing to start commercial operations of 500 MWh battery energy storage capacity soon.
NVVN CEO Somes Bandyopadhyay gave the update on Thursday, according to a Business Standard news report.
Another 500 MWh Planned
Bandyopadhyay said NVVN is targeting a further 500 MWh of battery energy storage capacity for commissioning during the current financial year. This would take the two planned additions to 1,000 MWh.
He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 18th India Coal Summit organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
3,000 MWh Government Scheme
NVVN is also working under a government scheme for 3,000 MWh of battery energy storage capacity. Bandyopadhyay said the company is involved in battery energy storage through different modes under the scheme.
The 500 MWh capacity expected to start commercial operations shortly is part of this broader battery storage work.
Storage of Electricity
A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) uses batteries to store electricity produced by generation plants. The batteries can be used individually or in groups, depending on the system.
Electricity stored in these systems can be supplied later. This allows power generated at one point in time to be used when it is needed.
Use During Peak Demand
BESS can store electricity when demand is lower and supply it during periods of higher demand. The systems can also store electricity when renewable generation is high.
This makes battery storage relevant to the management of peak power requirements and the use of renewable electricity.
NVVN's Projects
NVVN is involved in developing large-scale BESS projects across the country. The company is working on storage capacity that can be used by utilities for managing changes in electricity demand and renewable power generation.
