In a strategic move to strengthen India’s energy security and clean power generation framework, NTPC Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to establish a Coal-to-Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) facility.
This landmark step focuses on leveraging domestic coal resources through gasification technology, enhancing grid reliability and emission reduction.
NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power producer, entered into an MoU with EIL to develop a facility that converts domestic high ash coal into SNG. This initiative will harness coal from NTPC’s captive mines to produce cleaner fuel for gas-based plants and localised power generation. By doing so, NTPC aims to support demand during peak power consumption hours and enhance grid stability.
This partnership exemplifies the commitment to indigenous innovation. NTPC’s R&D arm, NETRA, is spearheading this initiative under its “Greening the Coal” initiative. This facility will also serve as a testing ground for carbon capture and utilisation technologies, which are essential for India’s long-term decarbonisation goals. EIL, with its proven expertise in engineering and design, brings critical value to the project’s execution.

The Coal-to-SNG project aligns with national priorities such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and cleaner coal utilisation. SNG offers a significantly lower emissions profile compared to raw coal and aids in reducing India's dependency on imported natural gas. This transition supports the broader thrust towards sustainable energy diversification.
NTPC currently contributes nearly 25% to India’s power generation, with an installed capacity of 84 GW and 30.90 GW under construction, including 13.3 GW in renewables. The utility is on track to reach 60 GW of renewable capacity by 2032. Alongside this, NTPC explores waste-to-energy, e-mobility, battery storage, hydro storage, nuclear, and green hydrogen technologies.
The NTPC-EIL MoU marks a critical shift in coal utilisation strategy through advanced gasification to produce cleaner synthetic gas. With a strong focus on indigenous technology and cleaner fuel alternatives, this collaboration will play a vital role in driving India’s energy transition and ensuring grid reliability.
