NPCI International Inks MoU with NTT DATA Japan to Enable UPI Payments in Japan

NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) has announced a strategic collaboration with NTT DATA Japan, marking a major milestone for real-time payments by extending UPI acceptance into Japan. This partnership is expected to simplify cross-border transactions for Indian visitors.
UPI Adoption in Japan through Strategic Alliance
On October 14, 2025, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NTT DATA Japan to introduce Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Japan. This alliance allows Indian travellers to scan QR codes using their existing UPI apps and make payments at merchant outlets acquired by NTT DATA.
Enhancing Travel Experience for Indian Tourists
This agreement aims to streamline digital transactions and provide convenience to Indian tourists visiting Japan. Between January and August 2025, more than 2,08,000 Indian visitors explored Japan, an increase of 36% from the same period in 2024.
With UPI support, day-to-day transactions for tourists like dining, shopping, or transportation will become significantly easier and safer.
Key Role of NTT DATA and CAFIS Network
As one of Japan's prominent payment processors, NTT DATA manages the CAFIS® network, Japan’s largest card payment processing system. With its extensive merchant network, this integration is poised to facilitate the success of UPI’s expansion throughout the country.
Both NIPL and NTT DATA will jointly undertake assessments and implementations to ensure widespread UPI compatibility.

Conclusion
The MoU between NPCI International and NTT DATA Japan lays the groundwork for the adoption of UPI in Japan, enhancing the user experience for Indian tourists. This collaboration represents a pivotal move in strengthening India’s global digital presence.
