NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) has announced a strategic collaboration with NTT DATA Japan, marking a major milestone for real-time payments by extending UPI acceptance into Japan. This partnership is expected to simplify cross-border transactions for Indian visitors.
On October 14, 2025, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NTT DATA Japan to introduce Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Japan. This alliance allows Indian travellers to scan QR codes using their existing UPI apps and make payments at merchant outlets acquired by NTT DATA.
This agreement aims to streamline digital transactions and provide convenience to Indian tourists visiting Japan. Between January and August 2025, more than 2,08,000 Indian visitors explored Japan, an increase of 36% from the same period in 2024.
With UPI support, day-to-day transactions for tourists like dining, shopping, or transportation will become significantly easier and safer.
As one of Japan's prominent payment processors, NTT DATA manages the CAFIS® network, Japan’s largest card payment processing system. With its extensive merchant network, this integration is poised to facilitate the success of UPI’s expansion throughout the country.
Both NIPL and NTT DATA will jointly undertake assessments and implementations to ensure widespread UPI compatibility.
