A Strategic Asset for NSE

The Nifty Index is more than a market benchmark for the National Stock Exchange (NSE); it is a strategic intellectual property asset that generates high-margin, asset-light revenue through various channels beyond trading activity, as per the RHP of NSE IPO and FY26 Annual report.

Index Licensing and Data Subscription Fees

NSE Indices Limited, a subsidiary of NSE, manages the Nifty brand and licenses its indices to asset management companies, insurance companies, investment banks, and global exchanges.

In FY26, revenue from index licensing and data subscription fees reached ₹151.85 crore, a 26% increase from ₹120.50 crore in FY25. The total AUM linked to Nifty indices in India was ₹8.14 lakh crore, with 425 Nifty indices as of March 31, 2026.

Passive Investing Ecosystem

Nifty's dominance in passive investing is evident, with approximately 73% of total equity and debt passive investment AUM in India linked to Nifty indices.

In FY26, 97 out of 127 new passive funds launched were linked to Nifty indices. This ecosystem generates licensing fees and data subscriptions, contributing to NSE's revenue.

Global Licensing and International ETF/Index Fund Tracking

Nifty's global presence is expanding, with 33 international ETFs and index funds tracking it as of March 31, 2026.

The transition of SGX Nifty to GIFT Nifty has opened new revenue streams through international licensing fees and derivatives trading at NSE International Exchange in GIFT City.

Data Feed and Terminal Services

Nifty is integral to NSE's data business, with data feed and terminal services revenue reaching ₹470.07 crore in FY26, a 15% increase from ₹407.13 crore.

Data connectivity charges were ₹1,128.79 crore, and data centre rack charges were ₹205.18 crore.

Derivatives Trading

Nifty derivatives are a key revenue driver, with equity options transaction charges at ₹9,997.57 crore and equity futures transaction charges at ₹1,480.10 crore in FY26.

Nifty 50 options remain the most liquid derivative contract in India.

Index-Based Passive Products

Nifty indices underpin a variety of products, including ETFs, index funds, and thematic indices. Licensing fees, data subscriptions, and index maintenance fees are generated from these products, enhancing NSE's revenue streams.

Nifty as a Brand

Nifty's brand value strengthens NSE's market position, with global recognition and strategic partnerships enhancing its competitive advantage.

The brand's recall and investor education initiatives further solidify its market presence.

Conclusion

In FY26, Nifty's revenue streams included ₹151.85 crore from index licensing, ₹470.07 crore from data services, and ₹9,997.57 crore from equity options transaction charges. The index's strategic value lies in its ability to generate high-margin, recurring revenue.
