On December 2, 2025, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) signed an MoU with Reliance Jio to implement a telecom-based safety system aimed at warning commuters on national highways.
The system will provide real-time alerts about accident zones, fog-affected areas, and animal-crossing stretches through SMS, WhatsApp, and priority calls.
The new system will utilise Jio’s existing 4G and 5G network to deliver timely alerts to travellers approaching risky locations on national highways.
Commuters will receive notifications for accident-prone zones, emergency diversions, fog-hit segments, and areas likely to have stray animals. These alerts will help drivers adjust behaviour and speed in advance, reducing the chances of mishaps.
Importantly, the alerts will be sent via multiple channels including SMS, WhatsApp, and automated high-priority calls, ensuring the highest visibility.
This initiative will initially cover Jio users near national highways and later expand through integration with NHAI’s platforms such as the Rajmargyatra mobile app and helpline 1033.
The proposed alert system does not require new roadside hardware. It will be powered through Jio’s current telecom towers, enabling a swift and cost-effective rollout.
Jio's digital infrastructure currently serves over 50,00,00,000 users nationwide, allowing widespread coverage from the outset of implementation.

A pilot programme will identify high-risk areas and set up alert thresholds across selected regional offices under NHAI. The system will be phased into operations and designed with complete compliance with regulatory and data protection laws.
NHAI has also indicated plans to collaborate with other telecom providers for similar projects in the future, extending the benefit to an even wider commuter base.
The NHAI and Reliance Jio partnership aims to reduce preventable accidents with minimal infrastructure changes by utilising digital connectivity. This initiative is expected to enhance road safety awareness and support more informed travel decisions across India’s national highway network.
