Indian Railways is introducing a new security measure from October 1, 2025. Passengers must undergo Aadhaar authentication when booking general reserved tickets via IRCTC during the first 15 minutes after booking opens. The initiative aims to eliminate misuse and promote fair access.

IRCTC's New Booking Protocol Begins October 1, 2025

From October 1, 2025, IRCTC will require Aadhaar-based verification for general reserved ticket bookings made through its website or mobile app during the opening 15-minute window. This rule targets the elimination of unfair practices, ensuring that genuine travellers receive priority access to limited seats. Offline ticketing systems at physical PRS counters remain unaffected by this change.

Impact on Passengers and Booking Timelines

This updated rule will not affect the overall schedule of ticket bookings. It will only limit early online access via IRCTC to individuals with verified Aadhaar credentials. After the first 15 minutes, the booking will open to all users regardless of authentication. The government's intention is to prevent bulk bookings by unauthorised users and agents during the peak demand period.

Aadhaar Requirement in Tatkal Bookings Already in Place

This move closely follows the Aadhaar authentication rule implemented for Tatkal bookings on July 1, 2025. Since then, users booking Tatkal tickets online must complete Aadhaar verification. Additionally, railway agents face restrictions during the initial 30 minutes of Tatkal ticket openings, 10:00 am to 10:30 am for AC classes and 11:00 am to 11:30 am for non-AC classes.

Continuous Curbing of Agent Abuse

IRCTC continues to extend control over authorised ticketing agents. The existing 10-minute restriction for agents on regular reserved ticket bookings remains unchanged. These time barriers and Aadhaar mandates reduce the chances of system exploitation, maintaining availability for the common passenger.

Conclusion

The Aadhaar authentication mandate marks a significant step in digitising and safeguarding railway ticketing. With this implementation, Indian Railways further strengthens transparency in its reservation systems, giving regular passengers a fair chance in securing bookings during the high-demand opening window.
