Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai, a joint venture between Mahindra World City Developers and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, has operationalised a major new manufacturing unit with the launch of Mitsubishi Electric India’s air-conditioner and compressor facility at Origins by Mahindra in Chennai, as per news reports.
The newly operational plant is located within the integrated Origins by Mahindra industrial cluster and spans 52 acres.
The project marks a significant scale-up of Mitsubishi Electric India’s domestic manufacturing footprint and adds to the region’s high-value electronics and climate-control equipment ecosystem. The facility was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin through a virtual plaque unveiling.
Developed with an investment of about ₹2,100 crore, the project strengthens Tamil Nadu’s positioning as a preferred hub for technology-led and capital-intensive manufacturing investments.
The unit has been designed with an annual production capacity of 300,000 indoor and outdoor room air-conditioners along with 650,000 compressors.
The company expects the plant to deepen local sourcing, support supplier base development and improve turnaround time for the domestic market. The expansion also aligns with the Government of India’s Make in India manufacturing push.
As per news reports, Atsushi Takase, MD of Mitsubishi Electric India, said, “India is witnessing rapid growth in demand for energy-efficient and high-quality air-conditioning solutions.
This facility will support this growing demand through local manufacturing, while enabling us to respond faster to customer needs, strengthen quality control, and ensure sustainable operations. It will position India as a core hub within Mitsubishi Electric’s global air-conditioning business.”
Vikram Goel, chief business officer, industrial at Mahindra Lifespace Developers Limited, said the expansion validates the integrated cluster approach being built at Origins by Mahindra, combining infrastructure, sustainability focus and logistics access.
He noted that repeat investments by global manufacturers reflect long-term confidence in the platform’s industrial ecosystem.
Origins by Mahindra, Chennai is situated on NH16 and falls within the influence zones of both the Chennai-Bengaluru and Chennai-Visakhapatnam industrial corridors, with port connectivity through Chennai, Ennore and Kattupalli supporting export-oriented manufacturing.
The commissioning of the new Mitsubishi Electric facility adds fresh momentum to Chennai’s manufacturing corridor and reinforces the region’s role in advanced, energy-efficient equipment production.
