JSW Group is setting up a vehicle manufacturing facility in Maharashtra as part of its entry into the passenger vehicle segment, as per The Bloomberg report.

The plant is to produce new-energy cars, along with electrified trucks and buses under a separate entity, JSW Greentech Ltd.

Initial output from the commercial vehicle line is likely to be deployed within the group’s own operations, with external sales to follow at a later stage.

Retail Model for Initial Phase

Before the first vehicle launch, JSW Motors plans to establish company-owned showrooms in select cities. At least 4 experience centres are expected in the first phase, including locations such as Mumbai, New Delhi, and Ahmedabad.

These outlets will be operated directly by the company, instead of franchise dealers, allowing tighter control over pricing and customer engagement during the early rollout.

Product Introduction Timeline

The company’s first model is expected in the second half of the year and is likely to be positioned as a premium plug-in hybrid. JSW Motors has also outlined plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid and a range extender vehicle in 2026.

Subsequent additions to the portfolio are expected to be introduced in phases across segments and powertrain options.

Dealer Expansion Plans

Parallel to the direct retail strategy, JSW Motors has begun outreach to potential dealer partners. These discussions are aimed at building a distribution network over time.

Prospective partners are expected to be introduced to the initial product line-up around June or July. Some models are linked to a separate arrangement with China’s Chery Automobile Co., though all vehicles will be sold under the JSW brand.

Market Environment

The company’s entry comes amid increasing demand for electrified vehicles in India, supported by lower running costs and emission considerations. Global energy supply concerns in recent weeks have also influenced consumer interest in such vehicles.

JSW Motors will operate in a segment where established players such as Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Mahindra & Mahindra are present, along with newer entrants including Tesla Inc.
