IRCTC Passengers Can Change Train Travel Dates Online Without Cancellation Fees from Jan 2026

Starting January 2026, IRCTC passengers will be able to change the travel date of their confirmed online train tickets without paying any cancellation fees. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told NDTV that the previous system was unfair and not in the interest of passengers, prompting the new change.
How It Works?
Currently, passengers must cancel their existing online ticket and book a new one for a different date, incurring cancellation charges. Under the new system, the same ticket can be modified online directly, saving time and cost.
Charges and Seat Availability
While no cancellation fee will be applied, passengers should note that there is no guarantee of getting a confirmed ticket for the new date. Confirmation depends on seat availability. Additionally, if the fare for the new journey is higher, the passenger will need to pay the difference.
IRCTC Guidelines Update
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recently announced updated guidelines for online reservation of general tickets, effective from October 1, 2025. The guidelines, focused on Aadhaar-authenticated users, aim to prevent misuse of the ticket booking system.
Scope of the Change
This rule change applies only to online bookings of reserved general tickets via the IRCTC website or app. The booking process and timings at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters will remain unchanged.
IRCTC Share Price Performance
On October 8, 2025, IRCTC share price opened at ₹716.00, almost the same as its previous close of ₹716.90. At 11:22 AM, the share price of IRCTC was trading at ₹703.45, down by 1.88% on the NSE.

Conclusion
The new policy, as reported by NDTV, will simplify ticket management for passengers, reduce unnecessary cancellations, and make travel planning more convenient. Travelers must still consider seat availability and fare differences when changing travel dates.
