Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will offer passengers greater flexibility by allowing changes to boarding stations up to 30 minutes before a train's departure, effective April 1, 2026.

Key Changes to IRCTC Boarding Point Rules

In a move to enhance passenger convenience, the Indian Railways has updated its regulations regarding boarding point modifications. Prior to this new rule, passengers needed to alter their boarding point at least 24 hours ahead of a train's scheduled departure.

This change represents a significant increase in flexibility, as travellers can now adjust their boarding station as late as 30 minutes before departure through the IRCTC app, website, or at reservation counters.

Important Conditions for Modifying Boarding Points

To utilise this facility, passengers must hold confirmed or RAC tickets, as waitlisted tickets remain ineligible for boarding point changes.

Additionally, each ticket allows for only one boarding point change, and requests must be made before the preparation of the second reservation chart.

The new boarding point will be updated in this chart, ensuring smooth travel for passengers.

How to Change Boarding Station through IRCTC

The process for modifying the boarding station is straightforward. Passengers should log into their IRCTC account, navigate to 'Booked Ticket History', and select the ticket for which they wish to change the boarding point.

A list of stations between the train's route will be presented. After selecting the desired station, an alert confirming the change will be sent to the passenger's registered mobile number.

Updated Refund and Cancellation Rules

Alongside the change in boarding point policy, IRCTC is revising its ticket cancellation framework. The maximum refund period has been extended to 72 hours before the train's departure.

Passengers cancelling tickets between 24 and 72 hours before departure will incur a 25% fee, while cancellations within 8 to 24 hours will see a 50% fee. Those cancelling less than 8 hours before departure receive no refund, aligning with broader efforts to streamline services.

Conclusion

These revised policies mark a shift towards greater flexibility and efficiency in passenger service by the Indian Railways. The update aims to facilitate a better travel experience by accommodating changes in passengers' plans and ensuring clarity in the cancellation and refund processes.
