Battery swapping provider Indofast Energy is to set up 23 battery swapping stations along the Mumbai Metro Aqua Line 3 corridor, as per PTI reports.
The rollout will be carried out through a partnership with Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). The stations will be located at selected points within metro station premises on the underground north-south route.
The battery swapping stations will be placed across eight stations on Mumbai Metro Line 3. These stations are Aarey JVLR, SEEPZ, MIDC, Santacruz Metro, Bandra Kurla Complex, Dharavi, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk. The stations cover a mix of residential neighbourhoods, business districts, and transport hubs along the corridor.
The swapping stations will support electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and small commercial vehicles. These vehicles are commonly used for deliveries, ride-hailing services, and short-distance travel around metro stations.
Battery swapping involves replacing a discharged battery with a fully charged unit, reducing time spent waiting for charging.
Indofast Energy currently operates 19 battery swapping stations across Mumbai. The company recently commissioned its 1,000th battery swapping station at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
Once operational, the Metro Line 3 stations will be added to the company’s existing network in the city.
Each station will be equipped with automated battery swapping systems. The systems are to support different vehicle categories using a common battery format. Installation timelines will depend on site readiness, space availability, and approvals from metro authorities.
MMRCL said the presence of battery swapping stations at metro locations is intended to support short-distance electric vehicle use around stations. The aim is to improve access to energy infrastructure for vehicles used before or after metro journeys.
The stations will be accessible to users operating along the Aqua Line 3 route.
With the rollout along Metro Line 3, battery swapping infrastructure will be available at multiple high-traffic metro stations. The installations will supplement Indofast Energy’s current network in Mumbai.
