The Indian Army has signed a contract to procure its first set of indigenously developed Software Defined Radios (SDRs), as per the news reports. The radios have been designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and will be manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The deal is the introduction of locally developed SDR systems into Army service.
The SDRs are to support high data transfer rates and include Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) capabilities. These features allow communication to continue even when traditional infrastructure is unavailable. The radios can transmit voice and data securely across various terrains and operational conditions.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation developed the SDR technology to meet the specific communication needs of the Indian Army. Bharat Electronics Limited, a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, is responsible for producing the radios. The project is part of a plan to incorporate locally developed technology into military use.
The radios will be deployed in phases across Army formations. They are expected to replace older communication systems that rely on fixed infrastructure. The SDRs are designed to allow units to connect through secure, real-time networks, which can operate independently in field conditions.
The signing of this contract introduces the Army’s first indigenously made SDRs into active use. The technology was developed and produced within the country, aligning with ongoing plans to adopt domestic systems across defence applications.
