India's electric passenger vehicle market reported sales of 26,319 units in May, up 79% from the same month last year, as per news reports.

The rise extended a growth streak that has continued since January 2025, with electric car and utility vehicle sales increasing for 17 consecutive months.

Higher petrol, diesel, and CNG prices, along with a range of electric models available in the market, have contributed to the increase in adoption.

Tata Motors Maintains Lead

Tata Motors remained the largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer in May, accounting for 38.9% of total sales. The company nearly doubled its sales volumes compared with the year-ago period.

In the current financial year so far, Tata Motors sold 19,526 electric vehicles, compared with 10,419 units in the corresponding period of the previous year. The company continues to have one of the largest electric vehicle portfolios in the domestic market.

Mahindra Strengthens Position

Mahindra & Mahindra increased its market share to 23.3% in May. The company sold 6,133 electric vehicles during the month, a rise of 112% from a year earlier.

Mahindra moved ahead of JSW MG Motor earlier this year and has retained its position as the second-largest electric passenger vehicle maker. Tata Motors and Mahindra together accounted for nearly 62% of total electric passenger vehicle sales during May.

Market Share Changes

JSW MG Motor's share of the market fell to 18.8% from 31.2% a year earlier. The company had held the 2nd position in the electric vehicle segment before being overtaken by Mahindra in March.

Hyundai Motor also recorded a lower share of the market. Its market share stood at 1.7% in May, down by 3.16 percentage points compared with the previous year.

New Entrant Expands Presence

Vietnamese carmaker VinFast, which started sales in India in July 2025, secured a 4.7% market share. The company sold 2,512 vehicles during FY27 year-to-date.

Overall electric passenger vehicle sales reached 52,274 units in FY27 so far, compared with 29,536 units in the same period a year ago, a growth of 77%.
