HMEL Secures Three Indian Patents, Showcases Global Innovation in Energy Sector

HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd. (HMEL), a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment, has announced that it has been granted three Indian patents. Two of these patents mark a world-first in the design of pipeline pigs — tools used to clean and maintain pipelines — that now allow the transportation of two different hydrocarbons, like naphtha and crude oil, at the same time within a single pipeline.
This innovation is a major step forward for crude oil logistics, offering greater efficiency, reduced operational costs, and improved safety.
Green Hydrogen Innovation
The third patent focuses on a cutting-edge device that produces green oxy-hydrogen gas. This environmentally friendly technology supports cleaner refinery operations and is aligned with HMEL’s broader goals of sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.
HMEL’s R&D Record
R&D and innovation are central to HMEL’s strategy. The company has filed over 44 patents so far and has had 9 granted, with a high success rate of more than 90% in implementing these technologies in real-world operations. This positions HMEL as a leader among Indian oil companies in the use of home-grown, patented solutions.

Conclusion
With these three new patents, HMEL continues to lead by example in innovation, sustainability, and energy efficiency. These achievements not only improve operational capabilities but also set new global benchmarks in pipeline and refinery technologies.
