Defence Secretary R K Singh confirmed that Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) will deliver 2 Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets by the end of September 2025. The jets will include full weapons integration.

Fresh Contract in Pipeline

After the delivery, the government is likely to sign a new contract for 97 Tejas jets, worth around ₹67,000 crore. Singh said HAL will be given this order only after proving timely delivery.

Current Fleet and Pending Orders

  • Around 38 Tejas jets are already serving in the Indian Air Force.
  • Another 80 are under production as part of a ₹48,000 crore deal signed in February 2021.
  • The delivery was delayed mainly due to engine supply issues from US-based GE Aerospace.

Importance of Tejas for IAF

The Tejas Mk-1A will replace the ageing MiG-21 fighter fleet.

  • IAF’s squadron strength has fallen to 31, below the sanctioned 42.
  • Tejas is designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance, and strike roles.
  • HAL aims to perfect the platform by integrating radar and Indian weapons.
