Government Refutes Claims of Public Sector Bank Mergers as Fake News

The Indian Government has dismissed as fake a circulating document claiming the merger of 9 public sector banks. The Centre clarified that the supposed gazette notification was not officially released by the Ministry of Finance, as per news reports.
Centre's Statement on Fake Document
The Centre took to social media on September 17, 2026, to address the confusion surrounding an alleged gazette notification about bank mergers.
Through the PIB Fact Check handle on 'X', the post clarified that no such document was issued by the official Finance Ministry handle, @FinMinIndia. It urged the public to verify any such claims by checking credible sources before acceptance or dissemination of information.
Details of the Fake Gazette Claims
The fraudulent gazette, which rapidly gained traction online, claimed that several major public sector banks were to be absorbed by larger entities.
It proposed that Indian Bank, Bank of Maharashtra, and Central Bank of India were to merge under the State Bank of India as the SBI Group. Similarly, Union Bank of India, Bank of India, and Punjab & Sind Bank were to be consolidated under Punjab National Bank.
Additionally, the document asserted that Canara Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, and UCO Bank would merge into Bank of Baroda.
Official Public Guidance from the Centre
In its clarification, the Centre advised the public to rely on the official PIB Fact Check as a credible source for verifying claims about government actions.
They provided their contact information on 'X', a mobile number +91 8799711259, and an email address factcheck@pib.gov.in for further reports on counterfeit claims.
