Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has taken a significant step towards enhancing marine propulsion technology by signing a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reintjes GmbH, a German gearbox design and manufacturing leader. The MoU, announced on 1 August 2025, marks the beginning of a technical collaboration aimed at integrating high-performance propulsion gear trains into vessels constructed at GRSE’s shipyards.

Collaborative Engagement for Defence and Export Markets

This partnership is expected to facilitate a broad range of joint initiatives, with Reintjes supplying its specialised gear trains for integration with selected engines aboard GRSE-built vessels. Describing the development as “yet another feather to its resplendent cap,” GRSE highlighted that the collaboration will significantly strengthen its capabilities in building warships for defence forces as well as commercial ships for both domestic and export markets.

The MoU also reinforces GRSE’s ambition to adopt global best practices and advanced marine technology in future builds, both for India’s armed forces and for international clients.

About Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers

GRSE, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, boasts a shipbuilding legacy dating back to 1884. After its takeover by the Government of India in 1960, GRSE made history by building India’s first indigenous warship, INS Ajay, in 1961.

Over the decades, it has constructed more than 800 platforms, including 112 warships for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and friendly nations, the highest by any Indian shipyard. GRSE also built India’s first export warship, CGS Barracuda, for Mauritius, and continues to deliver technologically advanced vessels across the globe.
