Anthropic on January 16, 2026, appointed Irina Ghose as Managing Director for India, as per Reuters. The appointment comes ahead of the company opening its first office in the country, located in Bengaluru.

First Senior Hire in India

Ghose is Anthropic’s first leadership appointment in India. The role has been created as the company prepares to set up local operations and expand its presence in the Indian market. Anthropic had announced plans for the Bengaluru office in October last year.

Previous Role at Microsoft

Before joining Anthropic, Ghose spent 24 years at Microsoft India. She most recently served as Managing Director, a position she took up in June 2023. Earlier, she held roles including Chief 0perating Officer and led the company’s education and cloud sales businesses.

Experience Across Sectors

During her time at Microsoft India, Ghose worked on enterprise technology adoption across sectors such as banking and financial services, healthcare, manufacturing and government. Her experience includes scaling large teams and managing partnerships with public and private sector organisations.

India Operations and Hiring Plans

Anthropic has said its India team will work with policymakers, academic institutions and enterprises. The company plans to build AI systems for local use cases and work on developer engagement. It is currently advertising a small number of mid-level roles in India, largely focused on AI sales.

Market Significance of India

India is Anthropic’s 2nd-largest market globally for its AI model Claude. According to the company’s Economic Index, nearly half of Claude.ai usage in India is related to computer science and mathematical tasks.

Anthropic is also training its models in several Indian languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Gujarati.

Anthropic Background

Founded in January 2021, Anthropic emerged during the global rise of generative AI. Over the past five years, it has raised about $27.4 billion. The company is reported to be in discussions to raise a further $10 billion at a valuation of roughly $350 billion.

Its investors include Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and the Qatar Investment Authority.
