Electric Passenger Vehicle Sales Rise 81.2% in May 2026; Tata Motors Retains Top Spot

Retail sales of electric passenger vehicles in India rose 81.2% year-on-year to 26,682 units in May 2026 from 14,725 units in the corresponding month last year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).  

The increase came as leading manufacturers reported higher retail volumes during the month. 

Tata Motors Retains Top Position 

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remained the largest seller in the electric passenger vehicle segment, with retail sales of 10,340 units in May, compared with 5,083 units a year earlier. The company recorded year-on-year growth of 103.42%. 

Mahindra & Mahindra ranked second after selling 6,210 units during the month, up from 2,891 units in May 2025. The company's electric passenger vehicle retail sales increased 114.8% over the previous year.  

JSW MG Motor India stood third with sales of 4,984 units, compared with 4,599 units in the same period last year. 

2-Wheeler Segment Records Higher Volumes 

Electric 2-wheeler retail sales also increased during May, rising 62.76% to 1,70,733 units from 1,04,896 units a year ago. TVS Motor Company led the category with 42,459 units sold, against 25,804 units in May 2025. 

Bajaj Auto followed with retail sales of 39,202 units compared with 22,642 units a year earlier, while Ather Energy sold 28,240 units, up from 14,101 units in the corresponding month last year. 

Other EV Categories 

Electric 3-wheeler retail sales stood at 71,867 units in May 2026, compared with 66,185 units in May 2025. Electric commercial vehicle sales also increased to 2,400 units from 1,094 units recorded in the year-ago period. 

The latest FADA retail data showed year-on-year growth across major electric vehicle segments, with passenger vehicles and 2-wheelers accounting for the largest increase in sales during May.

The May 2026 retail data shows continued expansion in India's electric vehicle market, with passenger vehicles, 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and commercial EVs all recording higher sales compared with the previous year.
