The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has taken a major step towards strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem by transferring 3 advanced materials technologies to industry partners. These technologies include radomes, specialised steel sheets, and high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel plates.

The initiative is aimed at boosting the production of critical materials for missile systems, defence applications, and naval vessels, thereby reinforcing self-reliance and technological progress in strategic sectors.

Technology Transfers and Industry Collaborations

The 3 technologies transferred are diverse in scope and impact. Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Jagdishpur, has received the technology for the manufacturing of high-strength radomes. These radomes act as protective covers for sensitive missile sensors, directly supporting crucial defence programmes and enhancing India’s indigenous missile capabilities.

Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), Angul, has been licensed to produce DMR-1700 steel sheets and plates. This steel offers an exceptional combination of ultrahigh strength and fracture toughness at room temperature, making it highly suitable for critical defence applications.

In addition, Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) will manufacture DMR 249A HSLA steel plates. These plates meet stringent dimensional, physical, and metallurgical standards essential for the construction of naval vessels, providing the Navy with robust and dependable materials.

Strategic Significance and Future Outlook

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DMRL and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau under the Ministry of Civil Aviation. This agreement will allow the bureau to leverage DMRL’s extensive experience, technical capabilities, and facilities for its investigative activities.

The 3 innovations span multiple domains, highlighting DMRL’s multidisciplinary expertise and its ability to respond effectively to industry requirements. Partnering with established industrial players such as BHEL, JSPL, and SAIL ensures that these technologies can be scaled up quickly and deployed both commercially and strategically.

Conclusion

The transfer of these advanced materials technologies highlights DRDO’s commitment to indigenous innovation and industry collaboration. By partnering with leading firms, the organisation ensures rapid scaling and deployment of critical defence materials, strengthening India’s strategic autonomy while paving the way for future technological advancements in key sectors.
