Dhanteras and Diwali Festivities Dates 2026
Day 1 – Dhanteras (November 6, 2026): Homes are decorated with lamps and rangoli; gold, silver, utensils, and other valuables are traditionally purchased. Devotees offer prayers to Lord Dhanvantari for health, Goddess Lakshmi for wealth, and Lord Kubera for prosperity.
Day 2 – Choti Diwali / Naraka Chaturdashi (November 7, 2026): The day celebrates Lord Krishna’s victory over the demon Narakasura. Traditions include ritual baths, lighting lamps, decorating homes, and small family celebrations.
Day 3 – Diwali / Lakshmi Puja (November 8, 2026): The main Diwali day is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Homes are cleaned and decorated, diyas are lit, families share festive meals, and many people also take part in Muhurat Trading during the special stock-market session.
Day 4 – Govardhan Puja / Balipratipada (November 10, 2026): This day commemorates Lord Krishna’s lifting of Govardhan Hill and is also associated with the worship of Lord Vishnu and King Bali. In many regions, it marks the beginning of the Vikram Samvat new year.
Day 5 – Bhai Dooj (November 11, 2026): The festival concludes with Bhai Dooj, when sisters pray for their brothers’ long life and well-being, while brothers give gifts and blessings in return.
Auspicious Time to Buy Gold and Silver
Buying gold, silver, jewellery, utensils, appliances, and other valuables is a popular Dhanteras tradition. These purchases are traditionally associated with wealth, good fortune, and prosperity.
However, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat and shopping muhurat are not necessarily the same. Those planning purchases should check auspicious buying timings for their specific city rather than assuming the evening puja window applies universally.
Why Pradosh Kaal Is Considered Auspicious
Pradosh Kaal begins after sunset and lasts for approximately two hours and 24 minutes. The period when Sthir Lagna prevails during Pradosh Kaal is considered especially favourable for Lakshmi Puja.
Vrishabha Lagna is regarded as a fixed ascendant and generally overlaps with Pradosh Kaal during the Diwali period. Drik Panchang recommends considering the Trayodashi Tithi, Pradosh Kaal, and Sthir Lagna while selecting the puja muhurat.
Significance of Dhanteras
Dhanteras is also observed as Dhanvantari Trayodashi, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari, the deity associated with Ayurveda and medicine. Devotees pray for both material prosperity and good health.
Another important ritual is Yam Deepam, or Yama Deepam, in which a lamp is lit outside the home in honour of Yama, the god of death. This is traditionally believed to seek protection for family members from untimely death.
