Danish and Cyprus Shipping Firms to Invest ₹10,000 Crore in Indian Maritime Industry

2 international shipping firms, Interorient Navigation Co Ltd from Cyprus and Danship & Partners Ltd from Denmark, have announced plans to invest ₹10,000 crore in India’s maritime sector, as per PTI report. This will be the biggest foreign direct investment in Indian shipping since the sector was opened to FDI in 2005.
Ships to Operate Under Indian Flag
All vessels acquired under this investment will be registered under the Indian flag. This is expected to add to India’s shipping fleet and bring more cargo handling capacity under the national registry.
With Indian-flagged ships transporting export and import cargo, the freight income generated will remain within the country. This could have an impact on domestic earnings from international trade logistics.
About Interorient Navigation Co Ltd
Interorient, set up in 1979, currently manages a fleet of over 100 ships worldwide. The company is involved in various segments of international shipping, including bulk carriers and tankers.
About Danship & Partners Ltd
Danship & Partners is based in Denmark and offers services like shipbroking, commercial management, and maritime consultancy. The firm operates across global shipping markets and partners with international clients.
Sector Context and Timeline
The FDI comes at a time when India is focusing on expanding its shipping and port infrastructure. The deal adds to broader efforts aimed at strengthening local maritime capacity.
The investment is also to support employment in shipping-related sectors. Increased local operations may create more jobs in ship management, logistics, and allied services.

The ₹10,000 crore funding from Cyprus and Danish firms is a notable entry of foreign players into India’s shipping sector. With ships flagged under India and revenue staying domestic, the deal represents a structural shift in how the country engages with international maritime trade.
