The Competition Commission of India (CCI) dismissed an anti-competition complaint against Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, as per The PTI news report.

The complaint was found to be speculative and lacking in substantial evidence, particularly relating to alleged anti-competitive agreements and misuse of dominating market influence.

Details of the CCI's Decision

The CCI's order clarified that the allegations made against Reliance Jio were generic and speculative, with no tangible evidence supporting claims of price alignment or abuse of a dominant market position.

The regulator in an order passed on Thursday, July 16, 2026, said it also dismissed similar charges against over 4,500 firms across various sectors.

Scope of the Allegations

The complaint claimed that enterprises in sectors such as telecom, logistics, government e-marketplace procurement, energy, FMCG, and healthcare engaged in coordinated actions that restricted free and fair competition. Sections 3 and 4 of the Competition Act, concerning anti-competitive agreements and abuse of a dominant position, were cited as violated.

Lack of Evidence

According to the CCI, the complainant was unable to establish the specific roles or provide relevant evidence, like freight quotations or bid documents, to substantiate the allegations. The watchdog stated that mere similarity in telecom prepaid tariffs and durations could not indicate an anti-competitive agreement in an oligopolistic market.

GeM Procurement Allegations

On the claims related to government e-marketplace procurement, no specific enterprises were identified in potential bid-rigging, and no evidence suggested coordination or exchange of information. The CCI stated the allegations lacked foundational facts for a detailed investigation.

Conclusion

The CCI's dismissal of the anti-competition complaints against Reliance Jio reflects a lack of foundational facts and evidence. With the accusations found to be speculative, reliance on sections 3 and 4 of the Competition Act was deemed unjustifiable for the investigation.
