Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has installed 6,979 4G sites across Kerala under its nationwide network expansion programme, as per news reports. The deployment is part of BSNL’s plan to roll out 1 lakh 4G sites across India.

The additional sites are expected to improve mobile connectivity and internet access in residential areas, offices, and indoor locations where network coverage has remained uneven.

The rollout also covers rural and semi-urban regions across the state.

Coverage in Tribal and Border Areas

Out of the total sites installed in Kerala, more than 322 have been deployed in tribal settlements and underserved border areas. These regions have faced limited telecom access due to terrain and infrastructure constraints.

BSNL said the installations are intended to improve access to voice and data services in locations with weaker network availability. The company has been increasing 4G coverage in remote regions as part of its rural connectivity plans.

Saji Kumar R, Chief General Manager of the Kerala telecom circle, said “This milestone is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a commitment to every citizen. With 6,979 sites now active, including 322 in the state’s toughest geographies, we are ensuring that high-quality data and voice services are no longer a luxury, but a right for all.”.

Indigenous 4G Network

The Kerala rollout is being carried out using domestically developed telecom technology. BSNL has worked with Tata Consultancy Services, Centre for Development of Telematics and Tejas Networks for the deployment of the network.

The company has stated that the 4G system does not use foreign telecom technology. The indigenous rollout forms part of the government’s push to support local telecom infrastructure.

Expansion Plans Ahead

BSNL has been adding subscribers in several telecom circles during the ongoing 4G rollout.

The state-run operator is yet to launch commercial 5G services, though it has indicated that its current network can be upgraded to 5G using non-standalone architecture.
