Around 2.3 Million New Demat Accounts Opened in May 2026; Below the 2025 Monthly Average

Growth in retail participation in the equity market showed signs of moderation during May 2026, with new demat account openings remaining below last year's average pace.
While the overall investor base continued to expand, fresh account additions reflected a more cautious approach among retail investors.
Demat Account Growth Slows Compared with Last Year
As per news reports, around 2.3 million new demat accounts were opened during May 2026. Although this represented an improvement over March and April levels, it remained below the 2025 monthly average of 2.5 million accounts.
May also became the 3rd consecutive month in which account additions failed to surpass the average pace recorded last year, indicating a gradual slowdown in the momentum that had characterised retail participation in earlier periods.
Despite the moderation, the total number of demat accounts continued to increase, reaching 229 million by the end of May 2026 compared with 227 million in April and 216 million in December 2025.
Investor Sentiment Faces Multiple Headwinds
As per news reports, market participants linked the softer pace of account openings to a combination of domestic and global factors.
Ongoing geopolitical uncertainties have weighed on investor confidence, while concerns regarding a potentially weak monsoon have added another layer of caution.
Higher energy prices following developments in the Middle East and relatively subdued corporate earnings growth have also contributed to a less enthusiastic investment environment.
Together, these factors have influenced the willingness of new investors to enter the equity market.
Retail Investor Base Continues to Expand
Although the pace of additions has moderated, the long-term trend remains positive. Total demat accounts increased from 216 million in December 2025 to 229 million in May 2026, reflecting an addition of 13 million accounts within five months.
Monthly additions reached 3.7 million in January 2026 before moderating to 2.8 million in February, 2.2 million in both March and April, and 2.3 million in May.
