Indian stock markets are closed today, May 1, 2026, to mark Maharashtra Day, which commemorates the formation of the state where India’s major exchanges are based. Trading will restart on Monday, May 4, 2026.

Segments That will Remain Closed

All trading activity will be suspended on both National Stock Exchange and BSE, including:

  • Equity segment
  • Equity derivatives
  • Securities Lending and Borrowing (SLB) 

Normal Market Timings

On regular trading days, markets operate as follows:

  • Pre-open session: 9:00 AM – 9:15 AM
  • Regular trading session: 9:15 AM – 3:30 PM

Markets also remain closed on weekends and public holidays. 

Commodity Market Schedule

Commodity exchanges will follow a different schedule:

  • NCDEX: Closed for the entire day
  • MCX:
  • Morning session (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM): Closed
  • Evening session (5:00 PM – 11:55 PM): Open 

May 2026 Holiday

Indian markets will observe another holiday on May 28 for Bakri Id.

Conclusion

The NSE and BSE will remain closed on May 1 for Maharashtra Day, while MCX will reopen in the evening for commodity trading. Investors should plan their trades accordingly ahead of the next holiday later in the month.
