Energy transition firm AM Group has commenced development of a 1 GW artificial intelligence data centre in Uttar Pradesh following a recent agreement with the state authorities, as per news reports.
The group, backed by the founders of Greenko Group, had signed a memorandum of understanding with Invest UP in Davos, Switzerland on January 20.
Its affiliate, AM AI Labs, has now received a letter of intent from the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority for land allocation covering the first 2 phases of the project.
The initial phases comprise 150 MW and 200 MW, forming part of the broader 1 GW AI and high-performance computing facility. Around 350 MW of compute capacity is targeted to become operational by 2028, while the full 1 GW is expected to be online by 2030.
The project involves an estimated $25 billion investment and deployment of nearly 500,000 high-performance chips.
AM Group stated that the platform will operate on a vertically integrated model spanning carbon-free power generation, data centre infrastructure, high-performance chips, software, applications and service models such as AI Pods as a service and tokens as a service.
The facility will be powered by renewable energy and pumped storage assets managed through the group’s in-house energy architecture.
As per news reports, Anil Chalamalasetty, Group Chairman of AM Group, said, “This is an enormously ambitious project, and that is exactly what excites us. AM Group has done this before. In green hydrogen and ammonia, we set out to deliver the lowest cost molecules in the world, and we are doing it.”
The announcement coincided with India’s AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. According to a Deloitte report, India’s AI market is projected to reach $20-22 billion by 2027, registering a CAGR of 30%.
With a planned 1 GW capacity and $25 billion investment commitment, AM Group’s Uttar Pradesh project represents a large-scale entry into AI infrastructure aligned with renewable energy integration and long-term compute demand.
