Adani New Industries Ltd. (ANIL), the renewable manufacturing arm of the Adani Group, is set to produce India’s longest onshore wind turbine blades measuring 91.2 metres. The production will happen at its Mundra facility in Gujarat. The move marks a significant technological leap and underscores the company’s push to strengthen its position in next-generation wind energy solutions.

The new blades will power advanced turbines engineered to deliver higher energy output, particularly in low- and medium-wind regions across India. Serial production is expected to begin within the current calendar year, following the successful erection of initial blades on a new turbine model, according to industry sources.

Scaling Up for Higher Energy Output

Blade length plays a crucial role in determining a wind turbine’s energy generation capacity. The 91.2-metre blades will enable a rotor diameter of approximately 185 metres, sweeping nearly 26,600 square metres—an area larger than three football fields combined.

A larger swept area allows turbines to capture more kinetic energy from the wind, improving capacity utilisation and overall power output. The shift toward turbines rated above 5 megawatts (MW) reflects a broader industry strategy to unlock wind potential in sites previously considered commercially unviable.

For India, where many untapped wind resources lie in low- to medium-wind corridors, larger rotors and higher hub heights are critical. By enhancing output efficiency, these turbines expand deployment opportunities beyond traditional high-wind states such as Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

Manufacturing Leap at Mundra

ANIL’s Mundra plant currently produces 78.6-metre and 80.5-metre blades. The jump to 91.2 metres represents a step change in design complexity, materials engineering, and precision manufacturing.

The facility has an annual blade manufacturing capacity of 2.25 gigawatts (GW), equivalent to roughly 450 blade sets. The company plans to scale capacity to 5 GW in phases, with a long-term target of 10 GW, positioning Mundra as a key global manufacturing hub.

Strong Order Book Supports Expansion

The expansion is backed by a growing external order pipeline. ANIL has secured 304 MW of orders from independent power producers, including Fourth Partner Energy, First Energy, and Opera Energy, for its 3.3-MW turbine model featuring a 164-metre rotor.

In the current financial year, the company expects to deliver up to 1.25 GW of wind turbines to third-party customers, alongside a similar volume for Adani Green Energy Limited projects, effectively utilising its existing capacity.

Conclusion

By manufacturing India’s longest onshore wind turbine blades, ANIL is aligning scale, technology, and geography to capture the next wave of wind energy growth. As turbine sizes increase and capacity expands, the Mundra facility is poised to play a pivotal role in accelerating India’s renewable energy ambitions.
