PM Ujjwala Yojana to Provide 2.5 Million New Free LPG Connections During Navratri

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Monday that the Centre will release 2.5 million free LPG connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Reports indicate that the distribution will take place during Navratri.
With this addition, the total number of LPG connections under the scheme will rise to 106 million. The new connections will be provided to women from low-income households.
Cost Allocation
Each connection will cost the government ₹2,050. This covers the LPG cylinder, regulator, stove, hose, consumer card, and installation charges.
The government is also providing a subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder to more than 10.33 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries. After the subsidy, a refill costs ₹553. This measure was approved by the Union Cabinet last month.
Scheme Background
PMUY was launched in May 2016 with the objective of providing deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor households. Under the scheme, the first refill and stove are given free of cost.
Beneficiaries receive a complete connection package including a pressure regulator, suraksha hose, domestic gas consumer card, and installation. The scheme is implemented through oil marketing companies.
Expansion and Coverage
The Ujjwala scheme has been rolled out across both rural and urban areas. It has expanded over time to cover households that were dependent on solid fuels like wood and kerosene for cooking.

Conclusion
The release of 2.5 million new LPG connections during Navratri will expand the reach of PMUY to more than 106 million households. Along with the existing subsidy support, the scheme continues to extend clean cooking fuel access to low-income families across the country.
