As per PTI news report, the government has announced the deployment of 10,000 air-conditioned e-buses across 116 cities in 26 states and union territories by the end of 2027. This initiative is part of the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, aimed at enhancing mobility in smaller cities and combating pollution.
On August 16, 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme to address transportation needs in towns with populations ranging from 3 lakh to 40 lakh.
The scheme aims to provide 10,000 e-buses to these cities, recognising the financial constraints faced by states in procuring such vehicles.
States were invited to submit their demands, and a selection criterion was established. Buses were sanctioned based on recommendations from coordination committees.
Out of 178 eligible cities, 116 participated, receiving bus allocations accordingly. In Bihar, 400 buses have been sanctioned for 6 cities, including Patna, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Purnea.
The scheme's implementation in Bihar is facing delays due to the absence of coordination committees. However, the government remains committed to delivering the first tranche of 10,000 buses by 2027.
A second scheme for 35,000 additional buses is on the horizon, with cities required to apply accordingly.

The introduction of e-buses is expected to improve the travel experience for citizens. A Sahaj ticket and a national common mobility card will be introduced, usable across various transport modes, including these e-buses. This infrastructure aims to benefit tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
Under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme, 10,000 AC e-buses have been sanctioned on a Public Private Partnership model, subject to participation in the PM-eBus Sewa Payment Security Mechanism Scheme.
A total of ₹112.46 crore has been sanctioned for developing associated infrastructure, including Behind-the-Meter power infrastructure and civil depot infrastructure.
The government's initiative to deploy 10,000 AC e-buses by 2027 under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme marks a significant step towards improving urban transport and reducing pollution. The scheme's implementation, despite challenges, is set to enhance public transport infrastructure across 116 cities.
