The Goa government is preparing to launch the Mhaji Ghar housing scheme, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah expected to inaugurate it soon. The scheme aims to provide housing security to thousands of people living on disputed or unregularised land.

The scheme is expected to benefit nearly half of all applicants in the initial phase. Application forms will be released once final legal formalities are completed. Local-level implementation is being planned to ensure wide coverage.

Why Does Goa Need Mhaji Ghar Housing Scheme?

The government is taking steps to grant ownership rights to families who were allotted flats or land several decades ago but never received legal titles. This includes residents under the 20-Point Programme, which originally provided 100 sqm plots to the homeless. Over time, many of these properties were either sold or passed on informally within families.

The focus now is on regularising these dwellings and granting ownership to the current occupants, providing them with legal status and long-term security.

How is the Goa Govt Promoting Swadeshi Goods?

As part of its broader development push, the state is encouraging citizens and businesses to support Swadeshi (locally made) products. Retailers across Goa are being urged to highlight Indian goods in their stores as part of a campaign to promote Swayampurna Goa and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The campaign encourages a sense of pride in local products while supporting small businesses and Indian manufacturers.

Welfare Initiatives During Seva Pakhwada

Goa is also observing Seva Pakhwada, a fortnight of welfare activities running until October 2. The government has announced several measures, including:

  • ₹62 crore in financial assistance to eligible beneficiaries
  • Appointment of Swayampurna Sakhis to aid community development
  • Approval of 48 Aajeevika vehicles to boost rural livelihoods
  • New initiatives under the Startup Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP)

Women are being encouraged to take part in the ‘Swasth Naari, Swasth Parivaar’ campaign, which offers free healthcare and medicines through local health centres.

Conclusion

With the Mhaji Ghar scheme, regularisation of long-pending housing cases, and a push for Swadeshi products and rural welfare, Goa is taking major steps towards inclusive development. Citizens looking to benefit from these schemes should keep their documents ready to take part in upcoming opportunities.
