The Andhra Pradesh government has rolled out a major welfare initiative for transport workers with the launch of the ‘Auto Driverla Sevalo’ scheme, aimed at supporting drivers whose incomes have been affected by the ‘Stree Shakti’ free bus travel programme for women.

Announced by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Vijayawada’s Singh Nagar, the scheme promises to deliver direct annual financial assistance to thousands of drivers across the state.

₹436 Crore Support for 2.9 Lakh Drivers

Under the new scheme, more than 2.9 lakh auto rickshaw, cab, and maxi cab drivers will each receive ₹15,000 per year. For FY 2025-26 alone, the government will disburse ₹436 crore directly into the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

Road to Electrification and Digital Empowerment

As part of his broader vision for a cleaner, safer transport ecosystem, Naidu announced plans to convert all public transport vehicles to electric in a phased manner. To further modernise the sector, the government will soon launch a dedicated app for autorickshaw drivers to receive bookings directly from passengers.

The platform will be linked to a control room to reduce idle time and improve income. Naidu also revealed plans to establish an Autorickshaw Drivers’ Welfare Board, ensuring long-term institutional support for transport workers.

Conclusion

The ‘Auto Driverla Sevalo’ scheme underscores the Andhra Pradesh government’s focus on inclusive welfare and transport sector reform. By combining financial support, digital integration, and future electrification, Naidu’s administration aims to ease the burden on drivers while laying the groundwork for a more sustainable mobility network across the state.
