Indian travellers planning a trip to the United States are facing long wait times for visitor visas, but not all cities are equally affected. While delays stretch up to nine months in some locations, Chennai has emerged as the fastest option for securing interview slots, offering a significant advantage to applicants willing to be flexible.
According to the latest data from the US Department of State, visa appointment timelines continue to vary sharply across India, reflecting strong demand and limited processing capacity.
Among major Indian cities, Chennai currently offers the quickest access to B1/B2 visitor visa interviews, with wait times of around three months. This is significantly lower compared to other metro cities, making it an attractive option for travellers looking to expedite their plans.
In contrast, Mumbai faces the longest delays, with both average wait times and next available slots extending up to nine months. New Delhi follows with a waiting period of about seven months, while Hyderabad and Kolkata report wait times ranging between 6.5 to eight months.
The wide variation in wait times suggests that applicants can potentially reduce delays by choosing a different consulate. Visa appointment availability depends on factors such as local demand, staffing, and operational capacity, making some centres faster than others at any given time.
Officials note that appointment slots are updated regularly, and new openings may become available, allowing applicants to reschedule for earlier dates if they monitor the system closely.
While visitor visas face delays, student and work visa categories are being processed more quickly. Student visas in New Delhi are available in less than half a month, while work visa appointments are generally accessible within one to three months across major cities.
This contrast highlights prioritisation in visa processing, with education and employment-linked categories receiving faster turnaround times.

For Indian travellers planning a US trip, flexibility in choosing the interview location could significantly reduce waiting time. With Chennai currently offering the fastest slots, applicants may benefit from exploring alternative consulates rather than waiting months in high-demand cities.
