Amid the ongoing US government shutdown, the US Embassy in India has clarified that essential passport and visa services, including H1B visas, will continue operations for now. Applicants, however, should be prepared for possible delays due to reduced staffing and resources.
The US government officially shut down on October 1, 2025, following a deadlock between Republican and Democrat lawmakers regarding the new budget. Despite this, the US Embassy in India confirmed through an official statement on X (formerly Twitter) that visa services, including travel and H1B visas, are not suspended. As long as the situation permits, all scheduled visa and passport services will continue across US embassies and consulates globally.
H1B visa applicants can breathe a sigh of relief as the embassy confirmed there is no immediate disruption. H1B, business, and tourist visa processes are considered critical services and are being handled, although certain functions may face limited delays. Staffing constraints may cause slower processing, but a complete shutdown of services has been avoided as of now.
The federal funding lapse occurred when the Senate failed to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to approve the spending bill. Political friction over healthcare allocations has sparked the impasse. Despite having a majority control, the Republicans couldn't secure enough votes in the Senate due to opposition from Democrats.

This is the first shutdown since 2018, which lasted for 35 days. That event became the longest in US history. Like then, essential workers are continuing without pay, while non-essential positions are being furloughed. The statement from the US Embassy assures that any changes or emergencies will be communicated through official channels only.
While the US government shutdown has led to uncertainty, H1B and other visa services remain unaffected for now. The US Embassy in India has given assurance of continued operations, although minor delays cannot be ruled out. Applicants are advised to monitor updates through official embassy channels for any changes.
