Uber Technologies has launched fully autonomous robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi through a strategic partnership with Chinese autonomous driving company WeRide. This marks Uber's first deployment of driverless vehicles outside the US and a key milestone in the autonomous mobility sector for the Middle East.
Uber and WeRide began operating Level 4 fully autonomous robotaxis in Abu Dhabi after obtaining regulatory clearance from the UAE authorities. The service is now available via the Uber app as part of UberX, Uber Comfort, or a newly introduced “Autonomous” ride option. The initial phase covers Yas Island, with plans to expand further by the end of 2025.
These rides are operated without any safety driver inside the vehicle, distinguishing this launch as among the first of its kind in the region. Trips on highways, airports, and inter-island routes will still include safety operators for the time being.
The service is run in collaboration with local partner Tawasul, which manages the fleet operations for WeRide in Abu Dhabi. WeRide received a UAE-wide federal permit in October 2025, leading to the Integrated Transport Centre issuing operational approval. These permits enable commercial-scale deployment of self-driving vehicles across multiple emirates, subject to local clearances.

Uber and WeRide aim to expand the autonomous fleet within the Abu Dhabi city core and extend services to Dubai and other countries. The Gulf region remains central to WeRide's global roadmap, with over 100 robotaxis already operating in the Middle East across various locations, including Al Reem and Al Maryah.
The broader international rollout includes driverless services in markets such as Riyadh under a supervised model and fully autonomous partnerships with Waymo in US cities like Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta.
Uber’s tie-up with WeRide to launch fully autonomous robotaxi services in Abu Dhabi represents a significant step in the global deployment of self-driving technologies. Regulatory approvals and local partnerships have paved the way for wider adoption, with upcoming expansions planned across UAE cities and globally.
