Anthropic has acquired Seattle-based start-up Vercept, bringing its technology and part of its team into the company, as per news reports. This comes as firms working in artificial intelligence continue to invest in systems that can operate software tools and complete digital tasks on behalf of users.
Following the deal, Vercept will shut down its desktop product, Vy, within 30 days. The company informed users that services will be phased out during this period.
Vy was built to interpret what appears on a computer screen and carry out tasks such as data entry, organising files and managing workflows through written instructions.
Anthropic said Vercept’s work will support its plans to improve Claude’s ability to handle multi-step tasks across live applications. These include navigating spreadsheets and completing processes across different software tools.
Recent testing shows progress in this area. On OSWorld, a benchmark used to measure how well AI systems interact with computer environments, Claude Sonnet models improved from below 15% in late 2024 to 72.5% following the release of Sonnet 4.6.
Vercept was founded by researchers connected to the Allen Institute for AI. Reports suggest that the company raised $16 million in seed funding in January 2025 at a post-money valuation of $67 million, according to PitchBook data.
Investors included Fifty Years, Point Nine Capital and the AI2 Incubator. The company later indicated that total funding exceeded $50 million.
Despite its funding base, Vercept remained a small operation, employing about 20 people, based on publicly available profiles.
The transaction comes at a time when several technology firms are working on similar systems that allow software to be controlled through natural inputs rather than manual steps.

The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Vercept’s technology and selected employees will now become part of Anthropic’s development work on Claude.
