GAIL (India) Limited has signed a long-term Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Vitol Asia Pte. Ltd. for the annual supply of approximately 1 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA) of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The deal follows a binding term sheet signed earlier in January 2024 and is set to begin deliveries in 2026, spanning a ten-year period.

Deal Expands Gail's LNG Footprint

Under the agreement, Vitol will supply LNG to GAIL from its global portfolio, further diversifying India’s energy sources. Highlighting the strategic relevance of this pact, Sanjay Kumar, Director (Marketing) at GAIL, stated: "GAIL is expanding its long-term LNG portfolio to meet demand growth. We are pleased to partner with Vitol Asia Pte. Ltd., and this agreement represents a key milestone in reinforcing GAIL’s capability to reliably serve its diverse and evolving customer base."

From Vitol’s side, Jay Ng, Chief Financial Officer at Vitol Asia and Executive Committee member, expressed: “Vitol is honoured to extend its relationship with GAIL to a long-term LNG supply contract. The growing Indian market is core to Vitol’s strategy and Vitol’s diversified portfolio enables it to offer India a stable supply of cleaner and competitive energy.”

Fueling India's Energy Ambitions

India emerged as the world’s fourth-largest LNG importer in 2024, with demand expected to continue rising over the next decade. In line with national targets, the government aims to increase the share of natural gas in the primary energy mix from the current 6% to 15% by 2030.

Supporting this vision, India’s LNG regasification capacity has nearly doubled since 2014, growing from 21 MMTPA to a significantly higher capacity today. GAIL’s latest agreement aligns with this trajectory, securing long-term, reliable access to cleaner fuels.

Conclusion

This strategic LNG supply deal with Vitol marks a major step in GAIL’s long-term energy roadmap. As India deepens its shift towards cleaner energy, such partnerships not only boost energy security but also support the nation’s broader decarbonisation goals.
