The West Bengal Government has revised the upper age limit for recruitment to several categories of state government posts. The changes were notified by the Finance Department through amendments to the West Bengal Services (Raising of Age-limit) Rules, 1981.

Under the revised structure, the maximum age for Group A posts has been increased to 41 years. For Group B services, the upper limit has been raised to 44 years.

Candidates applying for Group C and Group D posts will now be eligible up to 45 years of age.

Changes Cover State Bodies and Companies

The notification stated that the revised rules will also apply to recruitments conducted outside the Public Service Commission.

This includes appointments in state statutory bodies, government companies and local authorities governed under the West Bengal Regulation of Recruitment in State Statutory Bodies, Government Companies and Local Authorities Act, 1999.

The order added that where any department or service already has a higher upper age limit in place, those existing provisions will continue. The revised rules will not override such cases.

Order Effective from May 11

According to the government notification, the revised age criteria came into effect from May 11, 2026. The decision follows concerns over delays in recruitment processes across departments in recent years.

Several state recruitment exercises had remained pending for long periods, resulting in many candidates crossing the earlier age ceiling before vacancies were filled. The revised rules are expected to expand the eligible applicant pool for future recruitment drives.

The changes come after the 2026 Assembly elections in the state.

Recruitment Rules Amended

The latest notification formally amends the recruitment age rules that have been in place since 1981.

The revised limits will now apply across several categories of state government recruitment unless separate service-specific rules prescribe a higher age threshold.
